Imagine Marie Curie trying to schedule “discover radium” between 2-3 PM, only to have her experiments interrupted by the ping of a productivity app reminding her to “take a mindfulness break.” Or Leonardo da Vinci attempting to refine his latest invention during 25-minute Pomodoro sprints, only to find that breakthroughs don’t always fit neatly into timed intervals. Sounds ridiculous, right? Yet today, we often feel pressured to schedule every minute of our day — only to despair when distractions inevitably disrupt our plans. In this lesson, author Oliver Burkeman describes how great thinkers achieve success not by optimizing each minute but by balancing focus and flexibility. Don’t take focus too far Labeling things as distractions assumes that we know in advance what will be helpful or hurtful to us. Some things truly are distractions, but the idea can be taken too far. Many productivity systems advocate for exerting total control over how time will unfold. As a result, more things are labeled distractions. And they make the experience of being distracted feel worse. If your productivity plan is too rigid, you might push out the things that life ought to be about. Follow a middle path Throughout history, great thinkers have tended to dedicate no more than 3-4 hours each day to their core work. More recent evidence confirms the productivity benefits of constraining work in this way. Allowing time for rest and relaxation can actually enhance the creative process. Try to defend 3-4 hours of your day for focus. But don’t try to control the rest of your time as carefully. Stay open to serendipity. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Go Deeper with Big Think: ►Become a Big Think Youtube Member Get exclusive classes and early, ad-free access to new releases without leaving Youtube. https://www.youtube.com/@bigthink/membership/ ►Become a Big Think Web Member Get the entire Big Think Class library, premium print issues, live events, and more. https://bigthink.com/membership/ ►Subscribe to Big Think on Substack Get all of your favorite Big Think content delivered to your inbox. https://bigthinkmedia.substack.com/subscribe/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- About Oliver Burkeman: Oliver Burkeman is a bestselling author and journalist.
