Show description

When a charged particle moves between two locations with different electric potentials, the resulting change in the electric potential energy of the particle-field system can be found by multiplying the charge by the electric potential difference between the locations. Assuming no resistive forces, the movement of a charged particle between two points with different electric potentials results in a change in kinetic energy of the particle consistent with the conservation of energy. An electron volt (eV) is a unit of energy equal to the kinetic energy gained by an electron or proton when it accelerates through a potential difference of one volt under the electric force alone. 00:00 - Electric potential energy from potential difference 03:19 - Energy conservation: from potential energy to speed 05:23 - Negative charges and the sign of ΔU 06:29 - The electron volt 09:14 - Worked example: finding the final speed 11:22 - Conceptual example: moving a charge into a charged sphere ------------------ Khan Academy is a nonprofit organization with the mission of providing a free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere.
